Entropy
entropy, the shift from order to chaos.
When photographing the entropy of the everyday I looked to the 19th century spiritualist movement for inspiration. grainy black and white images of seances and blurry portraits of Spectres past haunt the imagery. I appropriated the style of 19th century through homemade pinhole cameras and sheets of photographic paper. The long exposure nature of pinholes allowed for me to perform the role of a ghost, donning long flowing and light material to capture all the natural motion in the material, casting a ghostly shadow upon the portraits.
While granting aesthetic quality’s of spiritualism I was looking for, this ad hock long exposure technique served a secondary thematic purpose of introducing chaos into the order that comes with deliberate artistic practice. While I organise and compose each shot, the long exposure, and randomness of pinhole photography re introduce entropy into the photographic process.
